Maisonette apartment in a listed old building
The west of Stuttgart is one of the most densely populated districts in Europe. It is a rarity to discover an unused roof. In the lower area of the future maisonette apartment, servants were previously housed, the upper area served as a stage. The roof beams were in their original condition. There were no installations.
The lower area of the apartment is kept in strong and earthy colors. The oiled parquet made of smoked ash creates a warm atmosphere. When the doors are open, the colorful rooms stand out clearly from the plain, white entrance area and create tension.
In the bedroom, the dark red wall color emphasizes the darkness of the room. The play of light of the Moroccan lamp looks lively and gives the room its individual atmosphere. The inclined extension with door and shelf elements was specially developed to create additional storage space.
In the bathroom below, the rough plaster emphasizes the diverse contours and gives the room depth. Mirror strips arranged opposite make the small bathroom appear spacious. Storage spaces were discreetly integrated into the necessary facing walls. This gray, rough, earthy mood is broken up by the shining turquoise of the glass tiles in the open shower.
So close to heaven
“Preserve the old, combine it with the new and create something unmistakable,
The architect Tina Kammer succeeded in doing this with this top floor apartment in Stuttgart. “
Bernhard Eder, Modernize Magazine
The built-in elements are temporary and simple and underline the airy, light atmosphere of the room. They address the existing structure and highlight the existing structure. The long bench also serves as storage space.
The existing floor board of the stage was completely brushed and completely preserved. The original structure of the plank floor is staged by the white, glossy lacquer color. Historical quotes such as cracks, burn marks and bumps tell many stories.
The existing fireplace was surrounded by a bar and resulted in a new spatial situation in the otherwise open space.
A partition was drawn in for the bedrooms and bathroom behind it. The attached wall panels stand out from the wall and look like they are floating thanks to the backlighting. Doors blend in almost invisibly. The grid of this wall can be found in the bench opposite.
